This module uses the ultra-low quiescent current 5V step-up DC-DC converter TPS610997 (Texas Instruments Inc.).
The TPS610997 draws about 1 µA at light load and operates from 0.7 V, making it suitable for applications powered by a single coin cell or one or two alkaline, nickel-cadmium, or nickel-metal hydride batteries.
You can shut it down via the enable pin; during shutdown, the load is disconnected from the input, reducing current consumption.
